When I decided to start blogging, the name HusbandDadDude was fairly easy to come up with, mostly because I am a Husband and Dad. Dude just sounded cool and rounded it off.
This got me thinking though…..
Now let’s start with what is a dude?
According to Wikipedia Dude is an old term, recognized by multiple generations although potentially with slightly different meanings. From the 1870s to the 1960s, dude primarily meant a person who dressed in an extremely fashion-forward manner (a dandy) or a citified person who was visiting a rural location but stuck out (a city slicker). In the 1960s, dude evolved to mean any male person, a meaning that slipped into mainstream American slang in the 1970s. Current slang retains at least some use of all three of these common meanings.
So the next question is am I a dude?
I definitely don’t see myself as a “dandy” or fashionista so I guess the 1960’s on wards meaning would apply. I always thought of the word dude as meaning buddy or pal and it has a fun, friendly connotation for me.
This then brings us to the last question, do I want to be a dude?
Absolutely! I’m definitely very comfortable in my role as husband and dad but deep down I’m still just a dude.
I like to hang out with friends. I like to pack a bag, get on my adventure bike and head into the unknown. I like to watch sport. I like to take things apart!
But I think more than all this, I think my kids would like to have a “Dude-dad”!
